March 2023 saw the Pixel 6 Pro get a bunch of new features, as part of the latest Google Pixel Feature Drop. The most notable is the faster Night Sight which debuted on the Pixel 7 lineup, and promises to speed up the process of taking low-light photos. Thanks to new Tensor-powered algorithms that has come to the Pixel 6 series. In our lab testing with adaptive brightness turned on, the Google Pixel 6 Pro turned in a slightly higher reading of 842 nits, compared to 821 nits for the Galaxy S21 Ultra. However, when I viewed each screen side by side outdoors in direct sunlight, the S21 Ultra’s panel appeared brighter. It’s an impressive point-and-shoot camera, and we found that it delivered great results in a variety of scenarios. Samsung's Galaxy S21 Ultra lasted a much longer 11 hours and 25 minutes with its 5,000 mAh battery. That time was reached when we set the display refresh rate to 60Hz, but even the 10 hour, 7 minute time we got when the adaptive display feature was enable handily beats the Pixel 6 Pro. We expect that this difference is due to Google using an older 5G modem. You can get longer endurance out the Pixel 6 Pro by turning off 4G, but that's not a trade-off you should have to make.

Hold For Me: Using this tool, you can set the phone to sit on hold for you leaving you free to focus on something else while waiting to speak with someone. Google says the tool is smart enough to tell the difference between a recorded voice message (for example, “Your call is important to us, please continue to wait”) and a real operator or company representative. Months post-launch and this feature continues to be hit or miss. Sometimes it works like a charm and other times it simply doesn’t. The main attraction of the Google Pixel 6 Pro is easily its advanced, multi-purpose cameras. The sensors themselves aren't the only reason they are excellent, mind you, but rather the top-tier image processing Google offers here is practically unmatched. On the rear side, it comes with a 50MP (f/1.85) main, a 12MP (f/2.2) ultrawide and a 48MP (f/3.5) telephoto with 4x optical zoom. And on the front side, we find an 11MP (f/2.2) one. The photos with the main and telephoto sensor are some of the best you can get from any phone today due to their colour accuracy and white balance. The video recording resolution is also at 4K resolution with 60 FPS. Display: Also Premium Rear camera: 50MP f/1.85 primary (82° FoV w/OIS), 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide (114° FoV), 48MP f/3.5 telephoto (23.5° FoV w/OIS, 4x optical and up to 20x “Super Res Zoom”)We also tested the phone on Verizon's nationwide 5G network in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and its surrounding suburbs. Speeds averaged 228.6Mbps down and 64.2Mbps up. The good news is that the company has created another powerful camera setup here, and we’ve found it to be far more versatile than on previous Pixel phones, with more options to play around with. A 12MP ultra-wide sensor with a 1.25μm pixel width and f/2.2 aperture sits next to it. The lens has a 114-degree field of view. The lens elements minimize the distortion that’s common with small-format ultra-wide sensors. On the bottom edge of the handset is the USB-C port, flanked on either side by the speakers. On the right-hand edge of the phone are the power button and the volume buttons.

Turning to the selfie cameras, the 11MP front camera on the Pixel 6 Pro does a good job rendering my red and blue hoodie, complete with the texture of the fuzzy inside. And my face and hair look pretty sharp. The S21 Ultra’s selfie looks pretty good but a bit overly warm in this case, and the sweatshirt pops a bit less. Calling Assistance: Google has enhanced Google Assistant’s ability to reduce the pain of making certain types of phone calls, such as to businesses that have complicated decision trees or long wait times. With Wait Times, for example, the Pixel 6 Pro can generally tell you when business numbers are at their busiest, which allows you to decide when is best to make the call. The tool lets you see an entire week’s worth of business hours. It works pretty well. As for 5G, the Pixel 6 Pro uses an older Samsung 5123 modem. This piece of hardware is more equivalent to the Qualcomm X55 modem from 2020 that we saw in the Galaxy S20 and iPhone 12 models. Granted, few US carriers take full advantage of the new X60 modem, but there are efficiency gains over the X55 and Samsung 5123. In practice, this leads to 5G on the Pixel 6 Pro (and the Pixel 6) draining more battery than it probably ought to.

Call quality is clear and noise cancellation works well. The earpiece tops out at 84dB, which is fine for just about any environment.Speaker audio is greatly improved on the Pixel 6 Pro when compared with its predecessor. Maximum volume peaks at 89dB and is well balanced, with a wide soundstage. Timbre is solid and there’s even a hint of bass. Google’s Tensor Processor Is a Leap Forward Don’t expect the Tensor processor to ace every benchmark—it won’t. Most smartphone benchmarks are poor indicators of everyday performance anyway, and some manufacturers capitalize on the public thirst for high scores by optimizing their chips and software specifically for benchmarks. Smooth, Fluid Performance Using a 30W charger, the Google Pixel 6 Pro reached 40% battery capacity in 30 minutes. The Galaxy S21 Ultra hit 56% in the same amount of time. Adaptive battery isn't function properly. no clue as to why... TBD to see what I've done wrong.. typical self. Finally, Face Unblur does just what the name implies: It removes blur from faces in motion. Once it recognizes the subject's face, it does a good job of removing blur, but it's not going to completely correct the smeared face of a child in motion.
