I received an ARC at this year's BookExpo, and I was excited to support my local Philly publisher, Quirk Books. Other terms relate to LGBTQ culture (about which more below), and some are words often used in relation to the LGBTQ community, but not exclusive to us, like “Ally,”“Family,” and “Equality. The little vignettes inspired by each letter of the alphabet are informative and uplifting for tiny humans who are intersex or gender creative and helps normalize the queer experience in an age-appropriate way. This is a fantastic book for a range of people, whether they be genderqueer, or related to or friends with someone who is.

I’ve also heard from some that they do think they’ve been brave—but as this is a point of contention, it would have been better avoided here. The GayBCs,” released last month by Quirk Books, is authored by a gay graphic designer who wants to ensure parents are having a dialogue with their children about their sexual orientation at a very young age. I am glad the book features intersex, non-binary, and pan as identities though, and a lot of the descriptions themselves are pretty cute with the rhyming. When I was 5 years old, I knew that I felt differently than the people around me, but I didn’t have the words. Something that used to be a privately intimate mutual interaction, not an identity, that wasn’t force-broadcasted to every person breathing air.I learned a new term (Mx) and some of my favourite parts of the book were the letters W and Y as we look to the future and support our youth and equal rights for all because at the end of the day to each their own (if you read the book you will find that one!

This is an extremely important book to have in all houses as this is a conversation we should be having with our children. According to Becca Mui, GLSEN’s education manager, helping young people see themselves and understand the world around them and how diverse it really is benefits all students. Update (2021): I have learned that a newer board book edition of this book has been updated to start with "A is for Aro and Ace," so I have updated my rating from 1 star to 2. Did however appreciate the variety of people that Ash got involved to share their experiences which made it feel a lot more authentic. The definitions are pretty good -- like "Bisexual" is "Someone who is attracted to more than one gender" rather than a more binary definition.I know that talking about gender, sexuality, and LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, and more! As someone who's relatively new to the lgbtq+ community, this was such a well structured and educational read.

If you need introductions to some of the basic terminology of the queer community, then this book will be somewhat helpful.The book may be over the top, but not half as over the top as the hateful and godless comments from this group. L. Webb’s bright illustrations and lively, inclusive poems delight in the beauty of embracing one’s truest self.
