As long as you aren't expecting the next great American novel I think most would enjoy this, one of oh-some-many, crime/action/espionage books written by the prolific author, David Baldacci. The story rattles along at a good pace and has enough twists and turns but as always it's the characters that I struggle with - they are just too perfect for their roles.

Without giving the story-line away, I found this was the book that finally stretched plausibility beyond its breaking-point: the main plot device is 'James Bond' like (and speaking as a chemist, scientific nonsense); the final action sequence is rather 'deja vu'; and, as this was the last in the series I was expecting some closure on the career of John Carr (one way or another), whereas its actually left entirely open. The President has asked Carr/Stone to take on a mission of national importance, one that he is uniquely qualified to do as he was once this countries top assassins. It is also propitious as I have been working a 1/2 block from Hell's Corner which is actually Lafayette Park across from the white house. Stone/Carr realizes that they've helped him more than he realizes and yes, he does need them around.

First Read: This series blows me away every time because the characters have so much depth and they are written with such clarity that you feel they just passed you on the street and said Good Morning. I'd have to say that the Camel Club itself didn't get as much play as I hoped because Oliver Stone spent too much time flirting with and kissing hot female spies, but altogether a very satisfying and entertaining book. Indirection and misdirection abound, with lots of talky exposition, the requisite maverick-y norm-flouting (“At this precise moment, I am violating the rules of ethics and perhaps a criminal statute as well”), and the usual sarcastic world-weariness (“The jurors don’t believe any of this because they have known for some time that Gardy was a member of a satanic cult with a history of sexual perversion”). You do catch up with everything eventually, but it does require some effort to continue reading when you are that lost. Before he died, it seems, Felix Vodyanov was linked to a passenger ferry that sank in 1994, an even earlier U.In this final episode of The Camel Club, Baldacci throws in everything except the Kitchen Sink, I felt.
