Les titres sont intéressants mais le problème, c’est que tous ces titres figurent déjà sur les diverses rééditions deluxe de ces albums : le disque bonus de la réédition de Rumours en 2004 contient 18 titres alors que celui de ce coffret 11 seulement, c’est gênant. Following their massive success, the band continued its infamous soap opera when its musical leader and guitarist, Lindsey Buckingham, threatened to quit if he didn’t get things his way, resulting in clashes not only with his band but especially Caillat, who had been essential to the band’s Grammy-winning sound. Such an edition of the group’s eponymous 1975 LP came out in 2012 and was followed in later years by box sets devoted to 1977’s Rumours, 1979’s Tusk, 1980’s Live, 1982’s Mirage, and 1987’s Tango in the Night. The group Fleetwood Mac has sold over 140 million records worldwide, and they continue to attract a huge following, selling out their biggest arena tour ever in 2013, decades after their debut.

Unlike some other band albums I’ve heard as alternatives there aren’t any short ‘filler’ clips from the studio. For those who have listened to the original albums many times, it is a refreshing listening experience to hear these alternative versions.

All too often it seems that remastering is the process of brightening up one or two instruments, leaving everything else a bit muddled in the middle. Hernan Rojas’s story recounts a young man who leaves Chile after General Pinochet’s coup to seek his future in the music industry of Los Angeles, where he finds success at one of the hottest studios in town. Often, when a band releases demo or rehearsal tracks or alternate mixes, their weakness serves only to point up the wisdom behind the choices for the official album. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

I dare say some people have had quality issues with copies of this album but I have yet to find an artist or label that doesn’t. The choices of alternate songs gives a nice change from the original but with enough of the OG songs we know and love to be a nice bonus. In general, the tracks are more stripped down without the final additional embellishments, such as the searing guitar on Go Your Own Way. The 1975, Rumors and Tusk albums are all presented in complete form with demos, early takes, rehearsals, etc. Throughout the book, both Caillat and Rojas detail not only the trials and sacrifices they made to finish the album, but also triumphs of musical inspiration and technical innovation that have made Tusk the darling of music critics and indie rockers today.

Nice collection, CD version mirrors the same aesthetics of the vinyl set, all CD faces have the same style of artwork as the corresponding LP center labels.Given that most people probably don't need an "alternative" Rumours LP as they probably still have the original (which, as we all know, sold by the truckload), I think that sales of the ALT recordings would likely be limited to hardcore collectors (like myself)! The sound quality on these recordings is top notch, its so crystal clear and life like that you will have to be careful as not to deafen yourself because you will be constantly turning the volume up. And even in the numerous instances where the well-known versions seem superior, the alternates often prove illuminating.

By the way vinyl doesn’t just warp unless exposed to undue heat, 180 g and 200 g vinyl will warp just about as readily as 140 g. One example of that: The Alternate Collection’s “Suma’s Walk,” an amiable but unremarkable instrumental riff that with a new name, beefed-up instrumentation, and terrific vocals, became the Mirage ear candy known as “Can’t Go Back.Three of the albums that Cat Stevens released prior to Catch Bull at Four—1970’s Mona Bone Jakon and Tea for the Tillerman and 1971’s Teaser and the Firecat—have been the subject of gargantuan golden-anniversary box sets that included up to five CDs each with new mixes, alternate versions, demos, concert material, and rehearsal tapes, plus Blu-rays, vinyl LPs, hardcover books, frameable artwork, and assorted other memorabilia. It would have been nice if the new edition of Catch Bull at Four had at least incorporated some bonus tracks and liner notes. At least there’s a large catalog of recorded material to remind us of just how potent a force this band could be. Since this is the alternate versions of the albums, it rather inconsistently includes and omit songs that were not on the original album track list: IE, no "Silver Springs" on Rumours, but there are b-sides and non album songs on Tango in The Night while corresponding hits are missing.
