About this deal

While gloss varnish isn’t required to use the Gundam Markers, for consistencies sake one of the models in this example has had a gloss coat applied. A sash cutter brush, often referred to simply as a "sash brush," is a type of paintbrush that has a slanted or angled bristle tip. The design of this brush allows for more precision, making it particularly useful for cutting in or edging work when painting. Here's what a sash cutter brush is typically used for in wall painting:

I tend to use pretty cheap brushes for my panel lining, replacing them as the solvents destroy the brushes. I’m sure it’d be easier with nicer brushes but using oils, thinners and enamels really shortens the life of a paint brush. For panel lining a size one or two watercolour or acrylic-style brush will have enough of a belly to hold a reasonable amount.I used to be all about Purdys, but Arroworthy’s are starting to become one of my new favourites, and I know a bunch of other decorators who feel the same. Having tried the Finultra over the past year or so I have to say, it’s top-notch. When it comes to cutting in above skirting boards, the Finultra is one of the best brushes for the job as it leaves such a neat finish. I’ve honestly been so impressed that I’m planning to get a few more. Presuming you plan to use it again in the future, remove any residual paint and wash thoroughly with a thinner, such as white spirit for solvent-based paints, or water for water-based paints. Your first cut shouldn’t be against the model, the aim is to leave some material between your cutters and the model. This helps to reduce the stress on the plastic joining the part to the runner, which is one of the causes of unsightly marks. Reversing the cutters so the flat faces away from the piece is an easy to way ensure you’re not taking off too much material at once. When it comes to durability, The Purdy XL Elite is top-notch. Unlike others I’ve used in the past (Hamilton Perfection, for instance), the Purdy XL Elite manages to hold its shape and integrity even after extensive use and washing.

Before I rattle off everything I’m using in this guide, I’m going to list what I feel is the absolute minimum you’d want, to get your kit panel-lined and water slide decals applied. We’re once again going to start with a gloss varnish as a base. The plastic is incredibly smooth but out of habit I like having a gloss base to work on, as it helps the decal move and conform to the surface. The Axus Décor 1.5in Precision Angled Cutter Brush has been designed with this specific task in mind. Featuring a blend of synthetic filaments, tapered for releasing paint evenly onto the surface, the angled taper of the brush is what makes it ideal for finer detail, keeping the paint on the wall where it belongs and not making a mess of anything it shouldn’t. With that being said, it does have some downsides. For example, the Finultra can go a bit stiff after a while, even if you’re really careful with it. But for its price and how well it cuts in, it’s not the end of the world. Any ‘best paint brush’ list is incomplete without the mention of Purdy so it’s no surprise that the Purdy XL Elite has claimed a permanent place in my toolbox for the times I need to cut in.It’s soft, holds a fair amount of paint, and can handle any water-based finish. A worthy addition to any toolkit, this one. 5. Axus Onyx Cutter Brush All that’s left now is cleaning up. The goal here is to remove very small amounts with each pass, using either your scalpel or sanding file. When using a scalpel, alternating your cuts from each side helps to reduce the chance of tearing the plastic, as does only shaving off a small amount with each pass. Colour correction and custom paint jobs Unlike Greg, I don’t have an encyclopaedic knowledge of the Gundam universe. I’d try to claim my brain is full of more useful things, but this would be a barefaced lie. I got in to the hobby because I kept seeing cool robots, and after buying a kit for a friend’s birthday I finally broke and had to have one of my own. It is worth mentioning that I have noticed a slight drop in quality over the years. The brush sometimes loses a few bristles during washing, presumably due to changes in their manufacturing process about 15 years ago. Nevertheless, the issue is minor and doesn’t detract from the brush’s overall performance. Control: Due to the shape and size of the sash brush, it allows for better control of the amount of paint applied to a surface. This can help prevent drips or runs.

As mentioned above, I usually go for Purdys, but the Axus Onyx is a solid alternative, especially considering it’s a bit lighter on the wallet. Fineness of the tip – The finer the tip of your brush, the sharper the lines you can achieve. It’s that simple. Best Cutting-in Paint Brushes 1. Purdy XL EliteAbsolutely. As all manner of debris and dust could have built up between the bristles during transport or storage in a shop, you’re going to want to give it a good wash and comb first.
