The John Deere D110 is a 2WD lawn tractor from the D100 series. This tractor was manufactured by John Deere in Greeneville, Tennessee, USA from 2011 to 2017. Suppose you want to fade from one waveform to another over a particular range of the keyboard. How would you do it? Let's suppose that the Partials in question are PCM waveforms, and therefore liable to exhibit formant-shifting (also known as 'munchkinisation' - remember?). It would be fairly easy to perform a keyboard crossfade from one Waveform Generator to the other - although it is worth pointing out here that a visual editing system can be a great help, and will actually encourage you to fully exploit programming features such as these. You'll need broadband internet access and a desktop or laptop computer with an up-to-date version of Windows (10 or 11) or macOS (11 'Big Sur' or higher).

There are a few more disturbing points about the PG10. As many of you will know, the D10 and D20 don't have front panel control over all the envelope parameters that actually exist beneath that front panel. The D10 and D20 have no TVF or TVA Level 3, nor the associated time parameters, nor will they allow the Pitch Envelope to have a non-zero Sustain Level. Odd but true, you can access these parameters from a D110 or from a computer-based visual editing program. Rather more odd, the PG10 doesn't support these parameters even on a D110, and if you tweak a D110's envelopes with a PG 10 you will lose control over these parameters. As if that were not enough to discourage you from buying one, the model Roland were kind enough to loan me had some nervous sliders. From time to time, a slider would put out a change of value, even if it had not been adjusted or even touched. I was playing a favourite flute sound from a remote keyboard, and was nowhere near either the PG10 or D110, when all of a sudden I was 50 cents flat. No fun. None at all. You get phase cancellation on a multiple oscillator (Waveform Generator) synthesizer when there are more than one Waveform Generator tuned to near enough the same frequency. As the Waveform Generators trundle along, from time to time the waveforms line up in such a way that, instead of the usual fat, detuned, chorus-like sound you would expect from your patch, you get a thinner and quieter sound. Sadly, this effect is too subtle to count as useful for tremolo purposes. With the Waveform Generators detuned to a large interval - over 25 cents on the Fine control - the usual chorus sound prevails. With a finer detune, a discernible 'skying' slow phase is heard. Lovely as a pure synth patch but limited to slow timbral sweeps, and an unlikely candidate for acoustic-imitative synthesis.

Timbre is usually defined in terms of tone colour or 'brightness' of a sound. What gives a sound its particular timbre is the presence of harmonics, or 'overtones'. A sine wave has a pure timbre - it has no overtones, consisting only of the fundamental frequency. Jean-Baptiste Fourier famously deduced that any complex periodic waveform could be broken down into combinations of sine waves at whole number multiples of the frequency of the fundamental. When working with synthesized waveforms, we are usually working with harmonics, but some sounds also contain inharmonic overtones. These are often 'formants' - overtones which are not a whole number multiple frequency of the fundamental, and which appear at the same fixed frequency at all pitches from the instrument.
