Like all compacts with a zoom lens, cameras in the IXUS range are susceptible to the "lens error" message if the lens is physically unable to zoom in or out. On Canon cameras, this manifests as the E18 error or the message "Lens error, restart camera" on more recent models.Pressing the latter button brings up two folders on-screen - the first containing the shooting menu, the second the more general purpose set-up menu. The first folder offers ability to activate the digital zoom, call up grid lines or a 3:2 format ratio guide on screen, activate i-Contrast, image stabilisation modes (continuous, shoot only, active when panning, or off), plus face and blink detection. The second available folder contains the set up menu, offering the ability to tweak various sound and start up options - unlike previous generations of Digital IXUS, there's not a rather unnecessary separate menu folder for doing this - plus format the memory card in use. The more experienced user can also turn off the aforementioned 'hints and tips' speech bubbles if they prove too much as well as manually adjust the LCD brightness or reset all settings. The 4x optical zoom with a 28mm-112mm 35mm equivalent focal range is a step up from the 3x optical zoom seen on a typical compact camera plus it has a fast maximum aperture of f/2.8. Optical image stabilisation is included for good measure, giving a wider range of shooting possibilities. Canon Digital IXUS 750 Digital Compact Camera". Canon Europe. 23 September 2009. Take complete creative control of your images with PIXMA and imagePROGRAF PRO professional photo printers.Optical viewfinders are however becoming unfashionable on modern compacts, so it’s not entirely surprising to find this feature missing in favour of a slightly bigger screen. Some will be sad to see it go, but the good news is the screen on the IXUS 130 / SD1400 IS is at least very good quality and quite visible in bright light, not to mention at shallow angles when held low to the ground or high overhead. This is in some contrast to the screen on Sony’s W350, which while sharing the same 2.7in / 230k specification, proved to be much less visible with direct sunlight shining onto it, or when held at high or low angles. Noise is spreading out at ISO1600 and the image is generally softer. But this option has still provided a perfectly usable result, suggesting Canon was being conservative in stopping here We have an example video here shot handheld in the best-quality HD mode, showing the digital zoom towards the end of the clip; stabilisation was enabled.

Previously a spring loaded zoom lever with a small lip protruding to the front, the IXUS 130 now offers a small plastic lever which you push left to zoom out and right to zoom out. It's not as responsive or as precise as the zoom lever on the 120, and it's also raised above the top of the camera, spoiling the otherwise clean profile. Completing the top of the camera is an adequately sized shutter release button. Canon IXUS 255 HS Digital Compact Camera". Canon Europe. Archived from the original on 3 November 2013 . In the upper right corner of the rear surface you’ll find the same flap as before, hiding the combined USB / AV output and Mini HDMI port; USB and AV cables are supplied, but as usual you’ll need to provide your own HDMI cable. Note the HDMI port isn’t active during composition, although you can monitor the live feed over the standard definition TV output. The presence of a standard HDMI port on the Canon is an advantage over the Sony Cyber-shot W350, which at best offers an analogue component HD output, and even then only with an optional proprietary accessory cable. As with previous IXUS cameras, the 130 is positioned as an upmarket compact camera that users might aspire to owning, mixing a quality metal body with well-disguised plastic to winning effect, and going some way to justifying its premium price-tag. Despite the small form factor, Canon has provided an adequately large 2.7-inch, 230k dot resolution LCD screen at the rear of the 130 for composing and reviewing shots in the absence of a traditional viewfinder. The screen works well, though sunlight still proves an occasional nemesis. Canon IXUS Wireless Digital Compact Camera". Canon Europe. 23 September 2009. Archived from the original on 2 September 2010 . Retrieved 7 April 2010. The Canon Digital IXUS 130 produces images of above average quality. The biggest issue is noise and loss of detail at relatively slow ISO speeds. The 1/2.3 inch, 14 megapixel sensor recorded noise-free images at ISO 80 and 100, but there's already some noise and slight colour desaturation at ISO 200. ISO 400 shows more noise and loss of colour, and ISO 800 and 1600 are even worse, with obvious loss of fine detail and further colour desaturation.
