About this deal

I know the comparison isn't fair but Viktor gives me major Kaladin vibes especially in the middle of LoS. He's grown a lot, he's been through so much and maybe we are now seeing a different side of him. Her horse forced a path through the crowds. The threat of her sword held the desperate at bay. Yesterday, she’d have felt safe within Eskavord’s walls. Today she was a commodity to be traded for survival, if any had the wit to realise the prize within their grasp. I loved it. The stakes were much higher, there was more magical and godly interference and I absolutely loved that! Gods meddling in mortal affairs is one of my favourite things to read about. The tremor beneath his tone revealed the truth. His horse was already weary. What stamina remained would not long serve two riders, let alone three. Viktor didn’t cheer the death. Eyes stinging with sweat, he saved every breath for the strength it lent weary arms and a flagging heart. There was only the press of bodies. The dead and the dying trampled underfoot. And the determination to outlast the foe.’

Eskavord’s gate guard scattered without challenge. Had they recognised her, or simply fled the naked steel in her hand? Katya didn’t care. The way was open.

The world was really well built and easy to imagine, but this story was very character-driven in my opinion. It has tons of really well written characters in it. I really liked Calenne as a character, because even though she has pretty much been held prisoner her entire life, she still doesn’t let a paltry detail like that stop her from doing her very best to achieve her goal. Her goal of course being to get the hell out of her prison and escaping the name of Trelan and all the awful legacy that the name entails. Other honourable mentions were; Anastacia, who held so much magical power, she was just plain awesome. Then there was Melanna, the prince of Hadari’s daughter, who wanted nothing more than to become a warrior to fight beside her father, even though tradition dictated women could not partake in warfare. Oh and my favourite duo were Kurkas and Revekeh; these two made the most unlikeliest friendship, but somehow they were both perfect for each other, and their banter together was the absolute best!! Lastly, I’ll mention Ebigail, one of the main villains of the story, and she was the most villainiest of villains indeed! Jeez, she was ruthless; the way she could manipulate situations to ensure her dominance and power, was both maddening but also well played! It’s a cliche, but I loved to hate her.

Now we have had wars, the Dark, the Gods themselves causing chaos, and yet Book 2 ends with big promises for book 3. Big changes seem to be coming, the ending of Book 2 sets up for something interesting, and also leaves Ana and Josiri with some newfound responsibilities. I cannot wait to see what happens in Book 3!Akadra’s sword scraped free of its scabbard. Blades clashed with a banshee screech. Lips parted in a snarl of surprise, he gave ground through the hissing rain.
