Leopard ( Panthera pardus); Physical characteristics and distribution". Comparative Mammalian Brain Collections. Leopard Cats live in forested areas with lots of trees and underbrush. They are elusive cats, and people usually cannot spot them in their densely vegetated habitats. Within their wide range they inhabit several different types of forests, including tropical forests with high rainfall and humidity, temperate forests, and coniferous forests with pine trees. a b Uphyrkina, O.; Johnson, E.W.; Quigley, H.; Miquelle, D.; Marker, L.; Bush, M. & O'Brien, S. The leopard is a versatile, opportunistic hunter, and has a very broad diet. [10] It is able to take large prey due to its massive skull and powerful jaw muscles. [29] [30] In Sariska Tiger Reserve, the dietary spectrum of the Indian leopard includes axis deer, sambar deer, nilgai, wild boar, common langur, Indian hare and peafowl. [31]Thesiger, W. (1949). Its coat varies in color from grey to tawny yellow, and its underside is white. At a glance, its pattern looks similar to that of an ocelot. Its coat has spots, blotches, and stripes at various points across its body. Both models agree in the rusty-spotted cat ( P. rubiginosus) having been the first cat of this evolutionary lineage that genetically diverged, followed by the flat-headed cat ( P. planiceps) and then the fishing cat ( P. viverrinus). [20] [22] It is estimated to have diverged together with the leopard cat between 4.31to1.74 million years ago [20] and 4.25to0.02 million years ago. [22]

In zoos, these cats live in relatively large enclosures with a variety of different hiding places and shrubbery. Zookeepers provide them with a variety of environmental enrichment like toys, new scents, chews, hidden food, puzzle toys, and more. a b Al Jumaily, M.; Mallon, D. P.; Nasher, A. K. & Thowabeh, N. Sexually dimorphic, males are larger and heavier than females. [8] a b Chua, M. A. H.; Sivasothi, N.; Meier, R. (2016). [6] Males have a total length of 182–203cm (72–80in) including 77–85cm (30–33in) long tails and weigh about 30kg (66lb); females are 160–192cm (63–76in) long including 67–79cm (26–31in) long tails and weigh around 20kg (44lb). [7] It is the smallest leopard subspecies. [8] Felis euptilura ( Elliot, 1871) based on two skins from Siberia. One was depicted in Gustav Radde's illustration cum description of a wild cat; the other was part of a collection at the Regent's Park Zoo. The ground colour of both was light brownish-yellow, strongly mixed with grey and covered with reddish-brown spots, head grey with a dark-red stripe across the cheek. [9] The initial binomial euptilura given by Elliott has been incorrectly changed to " euptilurus" by some later authors, but under the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature Article 31.2.1, nouns and noun phrases are not subject to gender agreement; at present, both terms appear in use, but only the spelling " euptilura" is correct. [10] The Two Leopard Cats – Researchers previously believed that the cats of this species in mainland Asia were the same species as those in Malaysia and the surrounding islands. Using genetic researcher, scientists have now classified the Sunda Leopard Cat as a separate species from the “Mainland” Leopard Cat. In Oman, leopards were reported to have occurred in the Hajar Mountains until the late 1970s. [7] The largest confirmed sub-population inhabits the Dhofar Mountains in the country's southeast. In the Jabal Samhan Nature Reserve, 17 individual adult leopards were identified between 1997 and 2000 using camera traps. [18] Leopards were also sighted in the Musandam Peninsula, [7] particularly Ras Musandam. [9] The home range of Arabian leopards in this reserve is roughly estimated at 350km 2 (140sqmi) for males and 250km 2 (97sqmi) for females. [17] The Dhofar mountain range is considered the best habitat for leopards in the country. This rugged terrain provides shelters, shade and trapped water, and harbors a wide variety of prey species, in particular in escarpments and narrow wadis. [19]
