Description

Saulsberry et al report on four cases where Mepiform was utilised for scar management following surgical incisions and burns. Throughout the treatment period (at least six months for each patient), the dressing maintained a low profile and remained in situ under a compression garment without edge roll or interfering with joint mobility. The scars, originally hyperpigmented, returned to a more normal pigmentation with a smoother and more flexible nature. Build up your skin tolerance. Wear the sheet for 4 hours daily for two days. Then increase to time advised by your therapist. Topical silicone has widely been shown to have a positive impact on hypertrophic scars and keloids. Mepiform dressings should be worn for a minimum of 12 hours daily, and if possible 24 hours per day, with twice daily washing. The dressing can be reapplied. It may take from 3 months up to a year or more to improve an old scar, depending on the condition of the scar tissue. For prophylactic treatment, Mepiform treatment should begin soon after surgical closure, when the incision has fully epithelialised, and be continued for at least 1 month.

Middelkoop et al found the use of Mepiform was associated with a significant improvement in hypertrophic scars in a study involving 12 patients. Safetac is a patented soft silicone adhesive technology. Dressings with Safetac technology are atraumatic upon removal. These dressings minimise trauma to the wound and the surrounding skin, which minimises pain to the patient. The risk of maceration is minimised by sealing the wound margins. Do not throw the gel sheet away if you develop any irritation or redness in response to using it. Remove the sheet, wash and dry your skin. Leave the sheet off until the symptoms resolve, then try it again, building up the skin tolerance slowlyRemove the release film and apply Mepiform over the scar. Avoid stretching when applying over joints. Mepiform is designed for the management of old and new hypertrophic scars, keloids and closed wounds which may prevent the formation of hypertrophic and keloids scars. Do not use the gel sheet on open wounds. If you develop a wound in your scar, remove the gel sheet and keep it safe until the wound is healed. Mepiform should optimally be worn for 24 hours a day. Remove the dressing once per day for inspection and washing of the skin. The dressing can then be reapplied. Mepiform does not have to be washed/cleansed.

Mepiform should under normal conditions be changed every 3 – 7 days or when the adherent properties of the dressing are no longer sufficient. Topical silicone has empirically been shown to have positive impact on hypertrophic scars and keloids. It may take from 3 months up to a year or more to improve an old scar, depending on the condition of the scar tissue. Mepiform shall optimally be worn 24 hours a day. It is recommended that Mepiform is removed once a day, e.g-when showering or bathing, for inspection and washing of the skin. For prophylactic treatment, Mepiform shall be used for 6 months depending on the condition of the scar.
