About this deal

Before I share my favorite rainbow carrot varieties, I want to point out that there is actually a carrot called Rainbow. It’s not a mixture of colored varieties but is a hybrid that produces different colored roots. The roots of Rainbow vary in color from orange to gold to pale yellow to white. The benefit of growing this variety is that you get a color range, but you also have the roots mature uniformly at the same time. The downside is that you don’t get red or purple roots from this hybrid. When the sprouts have grown to about 1-2” tall, they should be thinned vigorously. Because the seeds are so small, it is common, and almost impossible not to, over-plant and have too many seedlings vying for the same space. Carrots need approximately, depending on variety, 1-3 inches between each plant. If they are not thinned enough, you will end up with tiny, thin carrots that are all top and no root. Carrots are best thinned by carefully snipping the tops off the unwanted ones with a small pair of scissors. This reduces the possibility of damage to the delicate seedlings you are going to keep. If you’re thinking you can chop up a carrot and produce several carrot plants, you’re going to be disappointed as well. You can, however, grow a new carrot plant if the carrot you’ve bought still has it’s top! If given the right conditions, a carrot root top may actually grow and produce leafy topgrowth and flowers. The flowers will potentially set seed and you could technically harvest the seed and plant them in your own garden to produce multiple carrots. The orange carrot that we know today was believed to have come about due to hybridizing the yellow carrots brought over from Asia with relatives like the wild carrot and other wild subspecies native to the Mediterranean region. For this mix we selected five classic names in carrots. All of these varieties except one (Bambino) are traditionally full-sized carrots, but are suited for early harvest as baby vegetables. Their flavor and texture matures early, so you get the full "carrot" bite in delicious miniature form.

All our seeds and products have been tested here by us however if we still cant help you get growing we will offer a free replacement. Rainbow carrot substitute: You can substitute with Dutch carrots if you can’t find heirloom rainbow carrots at your local greengrocer. United States carrot consumptionpeaked in 1997 with Americans consuming 14.1lbsper person, but this number has since dropped off to 7.71lbsper person in 2020. California produces 85% of carrots consumed in the United States, likely due to their year-round production ability. Michigan and Texas are also important carrot-producing states today. Description of Carrot Plant The bright taproot colors of carrots are accompanied by feathery foliage that can reach about a for in height. Once growing, carrots are a great low maintenance crop. Water when needed to stop them splitting or going woody, and pull weeds if you like, leaving them as mulch on the soil surface.

Carrots germinate slowly and need a consistent moist soil to sprout. The top of the soil should not be allowed to get dry, it is true with most veg not just carrots, until the carrot seeds have germinated. Carrots can be slow to come up, but don't be afraid it should be about 3 weeks the most until you see the seedlings. The rule of thumb with watering carrots when they are young is to use less water yet water frequently. Ideally, the soil around them should be watered lightly twice a day, morning and evening. As mentioned above, one carrot plant will typically yield one carrot root, so if you’re thinking that you can plant a carrot root and produce a bunch of carrot offshoots (like potatoes) to harvest then you’ll be sorely disappointed.

Make drills in the soil with a trowel or by laying an old broom handle or bamboo cane across the soil and gently pushing down, aiming for a depth of about 1cm, or half an inch and leaving about 30cm, or 12inches between each drill. Carrot seeds should always be planted twice as deep as they are wide – so only about 1/4″. How can you germinate carrot seeds faster? Place rainbow carrots with toasted cumin seeds on one side of the sheet pan and red onions on the other side. Drizzle the red onions with olive oil and season with sea salt. Carrots are high in beta-carotene, a compound we metabolize as vitamin A. Carrots also contain high levelsof vitamin B6, fiber, and potassium. Purple carrots contain high levels of anthocyanin, which is an antioxidant.Temperatures above 80⁰F will reduce seed germination. The higher summer temperatures will reduce the growth of carrot plants and also decrease the quality of the roots by causing bitter or off-flavors. If you prefer to have successions of harvests you can plant carrots every 4 weeks until mid-summer. How to Grow Carrots
