Here are some of the most common chamois mistakes cyclists make—and what experts say you should be doing instead. Which seems a bit dubious, given that the variation in skin pH is apparently larger within genders than the mean difference between genders. Another alternative to expensive brands is that you can make your own homemade chamois cream! What else should I know? One of the biggest things to consider when selecting the best chamois cream for you is whether or not you want the product to include the ingredient menthol. As well as lubricants, many chamois creams contain anti-bacterial and anti-fungal ingredients to help keep you problem-free down there.

Almost as mysterious and magical as shaved legs is this substance known as chamois cream or chamois butter (or even “butt butter”).The directions usually say to “apply generously.” But I’ve found in most cases you will only need a thin layer to do the job. As a result, chamois cream can help to avoid saddle sores and groin pain, by reducing the friction that causes them and decreasing the chance of infection. It may be a bit of a mouthful, but Athlete Performance Luxury Chamois Cream – Pour Femme is, you guessed it, the female-specific version of the consistently very well reviewed Muc-Off Luxury Chamois Cream. Like the men's cream, it does its job really well, keeping you comfy in the saddle on long rides thanks to a formula that means it stays put yet doesn't feel greasy.

Dr. Zain Husain, a board-certified dermatologist, says that in addition to providing a protective layer that prevents chafing, chamois cream offers these benefits: The Udderly Smooth Chamois/Anti Chafing cream comes in much cheaper than competitors, and it still has antibacterial properties to keep saddle sores at bay, along with Shea Butter which moisturises the skin. While this will create a great barrier and lubricant to reduce friction, it doesn't have any antibacterial properties to keep bacteria at bay and doesn't let your skin sweat, so it may cause more problems than it solves. Often the ingredients list is far longer than that, so I like to look for products that are paraben-free, gluten-free, and vegan, and contain no artificial fragrances. Couldn’t it damage my expensive shorts?

The aim of chamois cream is to reduce the friction or chaffing between your cycling shorts and your skin. Questioning my faith about chamois butt’r was the best thing I’ve ever done for chamois butt’r, because it’s not just very good at one thing — it’s very good at many things. Protecting under-butt skin during long bike rides is a very specific mission, a mission that the butt’r accomplished so capably that I’d failed to consider its other possibilities until this summer. It can reduce your risk of saddle sores and groin pain, making big days in the seat more enjoyable.

I'd suggest using something like Savlon if required on those intimate areas, and chamois cream for the rest? Muc-Off’s Luxury CC chamois cream includes lots of ingredients designed to look after your most delicate areas. Immediate Media

Crotch Guard Skin Care Oil is a chamois cream that isn't because it's an oil. It's different to a barrier cream, Crotch Guard claiming that it works 'in' the skin rather than 'on' the skin. It's a difference that works. Really well. Thanks for the info, Coach. I have attempted to take it one step further by providing a multi-product review: Sudocream will have some barrier protection, as many parents will testify when helping babies with diaper/ nappy rash, but it's not as lubricating to ward off chaffing that can occur with an endurance ride.
